چکیده

Phenols are a large and diverse class of compounds, many of which occur naturally in a variety of food plants; they exhibit a wide range of biological effects, including antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, antiallergic, hepatoprotective, antithrombotic, antiviral, anticarcinogenic, and vasodilatory actions. We examined the genotoxic and clastogenic potential of three phenolic compounds: caffeic, cinnamic and ferulic acids, using the comet and micronucleus assays in vitro. Drug-metabolizing rat hepatoma tissue cells (HTCs) were used. Three different concentrations (50, 500 and 1500 μM) of these phenolic acids were tested on the HTCs for 24 h. The caffeic, cinnamic and ferulic acids were not genotoxic by the comet assay (P > 0.05). However, the micronucleus test showed an increase in the frequency of micronucleated cells for the three compounds, indicating that these substances have clastogenic effects in HTC.

Enhanced Lignin Monomer Production Caused by Cinnamic Acid and Its Hydroxylated Derivatives Inhibits Soybean Root Growth

Cinnamic acid and its hydroxylated derivatives (p-coumaric, caffeic, ferulic and sinapic acids) are known allelochemicals that affect the seed germination and root growth of many plant species. Recent studies have indicated that the reduction of root growth by these allelochemicals is associated with premature cell wall lignification. We hypothesized that an influx of these compounds into the p...

Inhibition of pancreatic lipase by phenolic acids--examination in vitro.

The influence of addition 2,4,6,8, and 10 microM of benzoic and cinnamic acids and selected phenolic acids (salicylic, p-hydroxybenzoic, gentisic, protocatechuic, vanillic, syringic, o-coumaric, p-coumaric, caffeic, ferulic, sinapic) on the activity of pancreatic lipase was examined in vitro. The strongest inhibition activities were observed with caffeic, ferulic and benzoic acid, while sinapic...

Effects of Vanillic Acid Against Mitomycin C-Induced Genomic Damage in Human Lymphocytes in Vitro

The hydroxylated derivatives of benzoic and cinnamic acids are known as phenolic acids. Vanillic acid (4-hydroxy-3-methoxybenzoic acid, Figure 1) is a dietary phenolic compound found in plants and fruits (Duke, 1992) and an intermediate in the production of vanillin from ferulic acid (Lesage-Meessen, 1996; Civolani, 2000). Additionally, vanillic acid is a metabolic product of caffeic acid that ...

Chlorogenic acids from green coffee extract are highly bioavailable in humans.

Chlorogenic acids (CGA) are cinnamic acid derivatives with biological effects mostly related to their antioxidant and antiinflammatory activities. Caffeoylquinic acids (CQA) and dicaffeoylquinic acids (diCQA) are the main CGA found in nature. Because green coffee is a major source of CGA, it has been used for production of nutraceuticals. However, data on the bioavailability of CGA from green c...

Glycosylation of capsaicin Derivatives and phenylpropanoid Derivatives Using cultured plant cells

Biotransformations of capsaicinoids such as capsaicin and 8-nordihydrocapsaicin and phenylpropanoids such as cinnamic acid, p-coumaric acid, caffeic acid, and ferulic acid have been investigated using cultured plant cells. Capsain and 8-nordihydrocapsaicin were converted into the corresponding glycosides which are three glycosides respectively using the cultured cells of Catharanthus roseus. In...
